The two most common wet granulation methods are fluid bed granulation and high-shear granulation. They give different granules and suit different situations.
How they work
- Fluid bed granulation: powder is suspended in a stream of hot air while binder is sprayed in, so granules grow in suspension; granulation and drying happen in one machine.
- High-shear granulation: powder and binder are mixed and chopped at high speed in a closed bowl to form wet granules, which are then dried separately.
Granule characteristics
| Aspect | Fluid bed | High shear |
|---|---|---|
| Granule density | Usually lighter and more porous | Usually denser |
| Dissolution and dispersion | Often faster | Depends on formulation |
| Process | Granulate and dry in one step | Dry separately after granulation |
| Fits | Instant granules, porous structure | Dense, strong granules or higher binder levels |
Real performance depends on the formulation; these are general tendencies.
How to choose
- For instant, porous granules, look at the fluid bed granulator.
- For dense granules and tableting, look at the high-shear mixer granulator.
- For water-sensitive materials, consider the roller compactor.
Trial your formulation on pilot equipment, compare the granules, then decide.
